Classification

​The Public Abattoir is responsible for the classification of all carcases slaughtered at the facility as well as competent authority for the implementation of EU regulations regarding classification.

The classification of carcases is established by EU Regulation 1308/2013 establishing a common organisation of the markets in agricultural products and regulated in terms of that regulation and other acts issued by the EU Commission in accordance with that regulation. 

In a nutshell, the said regulation establishes that EU scales for the classification, identification and presentation of carcasses in the beef and veal, pig-meat and sheep-meat and goat-meat sectors should be fixed for all EU Member States. The intent, amongst others, is to ensure increased standardization of meat production across the EU and therefore improved market transparency, and comparability of produce in terms of quality description across EU Member States. In other words, if a consumer purchases meat classified according to a certain grade, the quality would be the same irrespective of the Member State of origin.  This also ensures improved comparability of prices.
