The Food Fraud Unit was established in May 2024 within the Food Safety Commission at the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights. The aim of the Unit is to identify, investigate, and mitigate instances of food fraud, which involves intentional deception for economic gain by misrepresenting the quality, safety, origin, or nature of food products.

There are 5 categories of food fraud: 1) Adulteration/Product Tampering, 2) Counterfeiting 3) Document Forgery 4) Grey Market 5) Misdescription/Mislabelling

All buyers along the food chain should be cautious when purchasing food or ingredients if the price is well below normal. It is right to carefully check the label or packaging. If anything looks unclear or misleading, one should ask questions. One should not purchase the food or ingredients if there are no reassurances.
